We want to help you be at home on the road
We are passionate about sharing what we’ve learned over 8 years of living and working mobile.
In early 2016, we were searching for a way out of the day-to-day grind. We wanted to afford life as full-time artists and creators, but the leap seemed insurmountable. That is until we stumbled across a Craigslist ad and started dreaming. We compiled our savings, bought and renovated a 1987 Ford Coachman camper van, and jumped head-first into life on the road.
When we started, we didn’t know anyone living in a van and had very few resources to pull from. Instagram was beginning to become popular, and with its growth came the rise of vanlifers everywhere. We were embraced by a wonderful community of nomads, many of whom became lifelong friends. We had lowered our cost of living and were enjoying a life of freedom and growth. Six years and 48 states later, we have now traveled over 100,000 miles, touring the US, Canada, and Mexico with no end in sight!
When COVID hit in the spring of 2020, we suddenly lost all our touring income and were forced to re-evaluate what we wanted. We decided to sell our beloved camper van and begin the next chapter of our lives. But that didn’t mean settling down!
In August 2020, we purchased a 2007 Ford E450 shuttle bus and began five months of work on our conversion, documenting the entire process on YouTube! We suddenly gained a dedicated following of alternative living enthusiasts who encouraged us to continue providing resources for people looking to start down this path.
In May 2021, we decided to add another build to our roster by purchasing a 2017 Ford e350 Starcraft Starquest. During the build process, we documented every step in a 21-part YouTube build series. We sat down every week to discuss our product choices and show you what it takes to convert a regular bus into a dream home. This bus was not for us but was built to sell. It went off to its new family in December 2021.
We added our third build to the roster by purchasing a 2021 Chevy 3500 Unicell Box Van in May 2022. A 22-part YouTube weekly build series followed in the coming months as we worked through the challenges of converting the vehicle into a luxury home. We initially hoped the Unicell would be our next home, but the universe had other plans, and we made the difficult decision to sell it upon completion at the end of 2022.
With three builds on our resume, we decided our next project would be our ultimate dream vehicle. In October 2023, we purchased a 1987 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 1300L Ex-German Military Ambulance and imported it into the US. We are spent the next year converting this Unimog into our full-time home and completing our first off-road global expedition vehicle. A weekly YouTube video series followed this build as we documented the ups and downs of turning one of the world’s most capable vehicles into a four-season, 4×4 luxury home.
In November 2024, we began a project remodeling an already converted 2019 Ford Transit Van for a client. Our clients hired us to transform their poorly built (and frankly dangerous) Transit Van into something much safer, more comfortable, and convenient for their part-time travels. A previous owner had converted this van without prior experience, and there were obvious and dangerous issues within the build. This van was not a full build for us, as our previous builds had been, but more of a safety check and “edit” to change the layout to meet our client’s needs better.
There is so much information that goes into these builds and this lifestyle. We’ve already experienced the breakdowns, trial and error, DIY mistakes, and pitfalls of living nomadic and building out a rig. We learned a lot in our time on the road. Eventually, we realized that this lifestyle wasn’t just changing our surroundings; it was changing us. We became passionate about freedom, authenticity, sustainability, and minimalism. So much of what we have experienced on the road has been wildly beautiful and transformative. We are passionate about putting those experiences to good use by providing helpful, straightforward, and easy-to-find resources. Take it from us! We want to help YOU!
Thanks for being here with us at Our Way to Roam.
We are excited to share some of what we’ve learned through life on the road.
